This bird eating tarantula was easily the largest spider I have ever seen in the wild. I was wary of handling him for my research because I bet his bite would be painful due to his size (he couldn’t fit in my hand with legs extended!).
That’s me feeling very accomplished over catching him. You can kinda tell how gigantic he is. The crazy thing is- females are much bigger!
As it turned out, I shouldn’t have been so cocky….he was very docile, and didn’t even seem to mind when I stretched out his legs to measure them. I think he is beautiful. We named him big daddy and released him when he was finished in the lab.
PS…no spiders were hurt during my research- the ziplock bag was a temporary container to catch, and store them for processing. Totally fine for them to be in it for a short period of time.
